Contentment

VERSE PASSAGE: Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who gives me strength” – NIV

Many times over have I heard this verse. It appears to be a victory chant for our ability to do anything in which is why I believe many Christians use this verse. We perceive this verse as God wanting us to prosper, therefore I can do all things. But in context, the Apostle Paul was saying he has learned to live in whatever circumstance God put him in. Let’s look at a few passages before this one.

VERSE PASSAGE: Philippians 4:10-12 “I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” – NIV

This gives us a full picture of the meaning to verse 13. Are you wondering if you can live on your meager salary or hourly pay? Is God calling you to a ministry and you don’t know how to fund it? Are you wondering how you will persevere in your physical condition or continued diagnosis? This verse is an assurance to us that as we surrender to Christ, He will enable us to live in whatever circumstances He has called us. Paul announces that he found how to be content. And in the same way we need to find that also. Money will come and go but what we do for the Kingdom will last forever and ever. Jobs will come and go but our mission as Christians remains. Our health may dip sometimes but our strength in God is firm. Our life is constantly changing but yet our footing in the Lord will be the same. Paul stated that he learned how to be content no matter if he had nothing or everything. If he was fed or not. Then he proceeds to state that he can do all things through Christ who strengthens him. 

Next time you start to think that you can’t live like this remember you can also do all things (even endure your situation) through Him who gives you strength.
