My, Devotion to Him #12
VERSE PASSAGE: John 9:5-7 “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.” – NIV
Jesus sees a man who had been blind since birth. He goes to him, spits on the ground, makes mud and proceeds to apply it to the blind mans eyes. What a story right there in it’s self. The disciples must’ve been wondering what was happening. Honestly, if you where there following Jesus and He comes to a blind man you would probably think He was gonna heal that person. No big deal, Jesus has been healing people with all kinds of issues. By now you’d probably get use to Him healing random people. Now picture you and others around watching. You see Jesus spit on the ground and with His spit He makes mud. You’d probably be thinking “are you gonna heal this man or play in the dirt. I mean come on Jesus” Then you watch as He put this mud made from spit on a blind man. I mean this is insult to injury right here (by some people’s standards). If I was there I’d be looking at the other disciples whispering “what the heck is going on?” Now Jesus tells this man to leave and wash in the Pool of Siloam. Really? He hasn’t said “your healed”, “you’ve been made whole”, “because of your faith your healed”, I mean Jesus just spat in dirt, made mud, put it on this guys eyes and then tells him to go wash off. I’m sure more than one person was confused that day.
Though it wasn’t ever about instant healing, it wasn’t ever about telling him he was healed. It was the fact that he was told to go wash off in the Siloam Pool.
Jesus:
“Ordered him (without force) to go somewhere”
“Mandated him (without force) to do something”
Jesus told him to “go wash off” and told him where the “Pool of Siloam”. Now Jesus didn’t say you can go anywhere and wash off, He did not say doing this will heal you, He did not say wash off whenever you feel like it, He did not say trust me. He told him to go wash off in the pool of Siloam. With that said the way it was He had ordered him to go now. Though He didn’t force him. There was no threat, reward, or benefit given or revealed to this man to encourage him to go.
Sometimes we are told to do something in which we may not know why? Or may not know the benefit of doing something. However, once completed we reap the reward of our action in obeying a command blindly. We may not see reason for doing something, but doing it because it was said to be done can have a massive impact on our life. As for this man he listened without knowing anything and was healed for his obedience.
