The Sabbath Day

My, Devotion to Him #129

VERSE PASSAGE: Mark 2:23-24 “One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” – NIV

The Pharisees had accused Jesus’ disciples of desecrating the Sabbath by pulling wheat to eat on the Sabbath. Jesus was not about to have such high accusations be left in the air without any response. Jesus was going to bring the smack down to them.

VERSE PASSAGE: Mark 2:25-26 “He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” – NIV

If that wasn’t enough for them to back down Jesus went even further not even giving them a chance to speak.

VERSE PASSAGE: Mark 2:27-28 “Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” – NIV

Wow! KO punch! He just reminded them that the Sabbath was made for man to rest and seek a more personal relationship with the One who made the Sabbath. The Sabbath is to meet the needs of the man in totality which is physical, mind, and spiritual.

Jesus was stating that this life is not only about keeping commands but seeking a relationship with the One who made the commands. The Sabbath was not just created to restrict men with another rule to live by but to give man time that is set aside to have time with the Lord.

God bless.
