My, Devotion to Him #268
“See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!” – Psalm 133:1
I can’t be the only one to have wondered whether the earth really needs both alligators as well as crocodiles, carnations along with peonies, dolphins in addition to porpoises. I mean we can say that these are very very close in comparison. However, so many things that are alike in almost every way still differ somewhere. There is no question, God loves variety. His world is alive with diverse creations. There are thousands and thousands of different animals, insects, birds, and fish. The crazy thing is we haven’t seen all of the ocean yet and there are still things being discovered on land!
God doesn’t stop with that though. So many different plants, trees, weeds, grass and raw materials. You think God would have enough diversity but He doesn’t. He goes on to create mankind. Truly the greatest creation anyone could have ever created. Now you would think if He wanted us to be in His own image that every single person would look a certain way. Nope! God just had to go and make every single person different, skin, eye shape, color, hair color and type, height, birthmarks, and everything else that makes us truly unique when compared against anyone else in the world.
God calls us His children and like any Father, He wants us to get along in spite of our many differences. He created those differences for His divine purpose.
This verse in Psalm is part of a short Psalm that paints a vivid picture of how much God cherishes unity. Spiritual unity comes from a mutual appreciation of God’s Lordship. Uniformity, on the other hand, judges how much the other is like oneself.
People come to admire others and esteem them so highly that sometimes they seek to mimic them; how they dress, talk, lifestyle, habits, etc. However, we can find that we can’t quite nail it because the fact is that we are our own unique individual that He has created.
Just like preachers have their own way of preaching and authors have their own styles, we to have our own unique style because we are a unique creation.
Unity allows each person to bring something special to the table, in contrast to uniformity, which squeezes away variety in preference of cookie-cutter sameness. Every human on earth is a Child of God which shows uniformity. But! He longs for us to all work together toward His purposes. Which means we all bring different ideas, histories, experiences and skills which shows us unique unity.
God wants us to embrace, not mask, judge, or spite the differences in ourselves and others.
We are all created in His image but born into a sinful world by different families, in different regions of the world and adopted by God into His family. So we will all look and sound different but that will never change the fact that we are all His and it will never change how He sees or treats you.
God bless!
